When Exeter-based youth travel company, Global Vision International (GVI), announced their recent liquidation, soon came the news of UK Gap Year Students Losing Thousands of Pounds

No refunds have been offered to booked customers, and partnered suppliers of GVI haven’t received payment for several months, according to The Guardian (Thursday 9th July, 2026).

In an official statement published on GVI’s website, the company stated that all impacted participants will receive formal correspondence on how to lodge a claim.

Until then, you may be wondering what your next immediate steps are. Maybe you’re a booked GVI customer looking to claim financial compensation, or you had your heart set on a trip and are unsure what to do. Either way, our guide is here to help you out.

If You Were Booked Onto A GVI Project

Your first point of contact should be directly with the liquidators. You should have received contact from GVI regarding the liquidation process and how you can lodge a claim. If you have paid for your GVI project by bank transfer, this will be your main route - so register as soon as possible.

The best thing you can do in this situation is to gather all your paperwork immediately, including booking confirmations, receipts, and screenshots of all official correspondence with GVI. This includes any information regarding your trip cancellation and whether a refund is possible.

If you are in the UK, booked using a credit card and have paid over £100 (and not exceeding £30,000), you may be entitled to the Section 75 claim. This is a consumer protection law where you can claim your money back directly from your credit card provider if the item is faulty, misrepresented, or in the event of liquidation. We recommend contacting your bank regarding next steps as soon as possible.

Paid using a debit card (or a credit card under £100)? Most banks offer a voluntary scheme called a debit chargeback, where you can request for a transaction to be reversed. These are very time-sensitive, so we recommend contacting your bank immediately. Please keep in mind that because debit chargebacks are not a legal right (unlike the Section 75 claim), you may not be able to entitled to compensation.

We also recommend checking the terms and conditions of your chosen travel insurance policy, as “end-supplier failure” may be included.

Was your GVI-trip a flight-inclusive package? If yes, then look through your paperwork and keep an eye out for an ATOL certificate or ABTA membership. These organisations may be able to offer you financial protection and/or repatriation.

If you booked your flights separately, you may still be able to contact your chosen airline to see if a refund is possible in the exceptional circumstances.

If the Trip You Wanted to Do is Now Cancelled

GVI offered a huge variety of volunteering and internship opportunities abroad, so it’s completely understandable if you’re feeling disappointed by the news.

Now for the good news: Adventure360 also specialises in these once-in-a-lifetime travel opportunities, from wildlife conservation on an African safari to helping sea turtles in Sri Lanka, volunteering at a zoo in Australia, and more.

With 200+ trips and every continent ticked off, we’re pretty confident that we can help you find the perfect adventure that you’ve been looking for. So much so that you won’t even remember GVI in a few years’ time (but you definitely won’t forget all the memories you’ll make when volunteering with Adventure360 👀).

As ABTOT members, Adventure360 bookings are 100% financially protected through secure payment bonds. We highly recommend that all travellers do independent research into any travel company before booking, including their history, whether they offer financial protection promises, and if they are legally registered with one of the following organisations: ABTOT, ABTA, or ATOL.

And if you still can’t find what you’re looking for? Let us know! We love hearing new ideas and are always on the lookout for more destinations or projects that you guys want to do.
