Sometimes the days without a plan end up being the most adventurous ones. So when you see free time mentioned on your itinerary, trust that it’s for a reason.

Optional activities are the bonuses you add to customise your trip. Maybe that’s ziplining in the jungle, horseback riding into the sunset, or that viral beauty treatment. Whatever you fancy, there’s more than one way to get extra from your adventure. Here’s our guide to optional activities, from popular types to travel advice.

What Are Optional Activities?

Let’s say you LOVE heights. Your group mate bestie? Eh, not so much. You’re off paragliding, they’re off to the sauna. Nobody’s bored, nobody’s terrified, and you still meet up later with loads to chat about.

Being with like-minded people doesn’t mean you’ll always want to do the exact same thing. So embrace it! Optional activities are your chance to do whatever you want (within reason, of course).

In our experience, you’ll probably find someone in your group interested in the same optional activity as you. If not, a few people! Optional activities can also be a great way to bond with someone you’ve not had the chance to properly chat with yet.

Types of Optional Activities

Active & Adrenaline

Kicking off our list with the most popular category, because let’s face it, who doesn’t wanna feel like they’re on top of the world?

Active & adrenaline activities can range from anything that’s slightly outdoorsy to full “I can’t stop smiling” territory. Here are some ideas to get you inspired.

  • Bungee jumping
  • Helicopter ride
  • Hiking
  • Horseriding
  • Kayaking
  • Jet skiing
  • Mountain biking
  • Skiing or snowboarding
  • Skydiving
  • Snorkelling or scuba-diving
  • White-water rafting
  • Ziplining

Adventure360 does not condone the use of ATVs or quad bikes. We strongly encourage all of our travellers to avoid these activities at all costs due to the high health and safety risks associated with it.

Attractions & Passes

If you’re going somewhere like Japan, Brazil or anywhere else famous for the big city life, this is your vibe.

Maybe you have a free day and fancy going to that iconic exhibition, watching a football game, riding rollercoasters at a theme park, or partying all night at a VIP show. Just to give you a few ideas!

Even if certain attractions aren’t included in your tour, your group leader is likely to recommend these in advance. But if there’s something you really care about seeing and you know it could sell out, it’s better to book it up ahead of time.

Beauty & Self-Care

Treat yourself! Aesthetic travel is a huge trend and we think it’ll only get bigger. Whether that’s finding your colour season, getting your makeup done, or a spa day, optional activities don't always have to equal high-energy.

DIY Classes & Workshops

Your first thought when eating Pad Thai is probably, “OMG. This is incredible.” Your second thought is more like, “How can I make it?”

You can! A local cooking class is a fantastic way to learn more about the local food culture, from techniques to core ingredients… And if you ask us, a recipe is the best kind of souvenir.

Seen a cute paper lantern whilst shopping in Vietnam? Even better, make it yourself. Obsessed with Japan’s Samurai history? Learn the art of the sword from a real master!

Depending on the tour you choose, you may find a lot of these activities already included. If it is optional, definitely ask your group leader for recommendations - as they probably have a list ready to go!

Day Trips

Day trips are your opportunity to explore more of the local area. This could be anything from ticking off an iconic World Heritage site, to exploring another city or country. Oftentimes, this works out as more budget-friendly than an overnight stay, like France vs Monaco.

Looking to do independent travel before or after your group tour? It’s worth looking into day trips that are from your start/end location to get inspired by what’s about.

Travel Advice for Optional Activities

Listen to Your Leader

Your group leader genuinely cares about your wellbeing and wants you, along with everyone else, to have the best possible experience. Not only that, it’s their job to keep you safe. So when your group leader asks or tells you not to do something, please listen. It always comes from a good place.

Look, we get it. Being adventurous is fun, but there are still lots of ways you can do that whilst keeping safe. As a general rule: if you wouldn’t do it at home, don’t take the risk abroad. Safety standards can also differ, depending on where you are travelling to.

Look for the Signs

Figuratively and literally. When a sign says not to sit on the railing, don’t do it. If the safety equipment doesn’t look or feel right, or you have any questions, it’s okay to double-check.

Trust Your Gut

If you get travel anxiety, sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference between nerves vs your intuition talking. Take this as your permission to back out of an activity if you’re really not feeling it.

There’s no judgement and it’s more important to know where your boundaries sit. It’s great to get out of your comfort zone, but don’t force it if it makes you feel distressed. Safety is just as much a mental thing as it is physical.

Dress for Safety

Helmets and seat belts exist for a reason. So do all the safety clothing and equipment for your chosen activity. They’re designed to protect you and minimise the risk or harm of injuries. Dress for the occasion and you can focus on having fun!

Take Lessons/Training if Needed

Stick to the basics if you’re a total beginner, and you’ll be amazed by how much progress you can make in a few lessons. Because guys, I promise that if you’ve never skied a day in your life, taking on that insane mountain run won’t end well. At all.

Best case, that’s your new embarrassing memory that haunts you before bed. Worse case, you injure yourself and/or others. Don’t be that traveller.

Travel Insurance is Not Optional

Travel insurance is the one thing everyone hopes they don’t need to use. But if you do, having a safety net in place could quite literally save your life.

In non-emergency scenarios, it could help you to recover lost or stolen luggage, connect you to local doctors, or even postpone a trip - e.g., if you have exam resits coming up.

Always do your research before choosing a travel insurance plan. Don’t just assume something’s included. You should always check if an optional activity you’d love to do is covered by your plan, or can be added on at checkout. For more information about purchasing travel insurance, you can visit the FCDO Travel Insurance page.

Wondering When to Buy Travel Insurance? We recommend getting it as soon as your trip is confirmed. That way, you’re protected before your adventure even starts.

Exploring new countries is the most exhilarating feeling ever. With the right mindset and support, you can focus on all the best bits about travelling. Having fun, safely stepping out of your comfort zone, and making only the kind of memories you want to remember.
