Jungles, volcanoes and tropical island-hopping all sound like a bit of you? Central America is a lot of that.
From wildlife to wild nights out, think unlimited adventure in this stunning region. Ancient Maya pyramids, turquoise crater lakes, pastel cities where you’ll be saying “Should I move here?” about a thousand times… The answer is yes, of course!
Here’s how you can tick all this off your bucket list. Let’s dig into the best places to visit in Central America for first-timers. Vamos!
Disclaimer: Don’t worry, guys, we know our geography. 😏 So yes, we know that Mexico isn’t *technically* Central America. But most of our Central America tours start here, and frankly, Mexico is too culturally iconic to skip. On with the article.
1. Costa Rica
Dream big, because Costa Rica is nature to the extreme. From swimming in jungle hot springs to chasing fiery sunsets, the intensity of beauty is unreal. You’ll find something for everyone here - adrenaline activities, beach yoga, birdwatching, late nights partying with other travellers, or all of the above!
If you only have time for one country in Central America, Costa Rica is a great shout. You can pack a lot of adventure into just two weeks. Whilst public transport is fairly limited, Costa Rica has a well-established tourism scene that makes it one of the most first-timer-friendly countries on this list.
Here’s what Sarah, one of our team members at Adventure360, had to say about her trip to Costa Rica:
My trip to Costa Rica was full of firsts! I went horseriding, surfing, and so much more. Being on a group tour was the best way to experience Central America.

Where to Go in Costa Rica?
La Fortuna
When you think of Costa Rica, it’s La Fortuna. Down to that iconic view of Arenal Volcano, rolling out into lush stretches of rainforest.
Climb along the hanging bridges, venture on the hiking trails, soak in steamy thermal springs, or go ziplining through the air. This is Costa Rica’s ‘Adventure Capital’, after all. Go big on adrenaline!
Monteverde Cloud Forest
Ever heard of a cloud forest before? It’s pretty rare, and the best way to describe it is fairytale meets jungle vibes. Giant trees wrapped in moss, blankets of mist, and bird calls echoing above. Your head will be in the clouds here, literally.
Manuel Antonio National Park
Popular for a reason, Manuel Antonio is all about variety. You’ve got the perfect mix of beaches and jungle waiting to be discovered. Tropical palm trees and turquoise shores are on the horizon. But the most memorable part? Adorable little Capuchin monkeys (think Marcel from Friends).
2. Mexico
Mexico is like that friend who’s annoyingly good at everything. Seriously, it’s unfair. Beach lover? These sun-kissed shorelines are about to spoil you. Into culture? One World Wonder, coming right up. Foodie? Welcome to one of the Best Countries in the World for Amazing Food.
You’ve got an appetite for adventure, and Mexico is about to hit alllll the cravings. Similar to Costa Rica, this country works great on its own or as a pair. If you can only get away for one or two weeks, you can still experience so many highlights in Mexico.
Where to Go in Mexico?
Chichén Itzá
Not every country gets to say they have a world wonder. Mexico does. Welcome to Chichén Itzá, famed for its giant stretches of Mayan ruins, once a thriving city. No spoilers, but standing at the foot of El Castillo - yes, that pyramid - is a pinch-me moment. Your bucket list will thank you!
Isla Holbox
You already know that Mexico’s beaches are iconic. So what makes Isla Holbox special? For starters, it’s a castaway-style island without a car in sight (minus the golf carts). You won’t find mega resorts here. Instead, the vibe is relaxing in rainbow hammocks, partying at beachside bars, and, if you get lucky, spotting pink flamingos on an island-hopping cruise.
Oaxaca City
Love Mexican food? Duh, you’d be crazy not to. Now imagine an entire city dedicated to discovering the best meals of your life. From late-night street food crawls to traditional bakeries, rising star restaurants to that secret gem only your group leader knows about, that’s the type of energy Oaxaca brings.
3. Guatemala
Our team is pretty well-travelled, so when a destination is a universal fave, you know it’s serious. That’s how much we love Guatemala!
Give it a day, and you’ll be feeling the exact same way. You can climb ruins in the jungle, feeling like Indiana Jones. Experience local life at homestays, backed by views you could spend an eternity soaking in. Conquer the Acatenango Volcano trek, where you can spot lava bursts from afar overnight… We’re not exaggerating.
Need extra convincing? Adventure360 team member Aimee describes it best.
Guatemala just has my heart. I love Guatemala. We saw such a variety of landscapes inside a small country that’s not super on the radar. It was so cool.

Where to Go in Guatemala?
Antigua
You’ll be daydreaming about ditching the ordinary for Antigua in 3, 2, 1… Guatemala’s most famous city is a maze of stunning pastel streets, cobblestones, and volcano peaks. So if you love spontaneous days? Get ready to wander, sightsee, repeat. Antigua can match pretty much any pace, from lazy mornings to salsa dancing late into the night.
Acatenango Volcano
Life when you listen to your spontaneous friend 👈
If you’re seeing Acatenango Volcano all over your socials, take it as a sign! Yes, it can be pretty challenging, but you’ve got porters (they carry your bag), local guides and travel mates by your side cheering you on. You’ll never stop talking about the night you camped under the stars on a literal volcano… Fingers crossed for a clear view of Fuego Volcano, with lava bursts in the distance.
Lake Atitlán
Now that’s a sight for sore eyes. Picture bright sapphire lakes that go on forever, lapping the shores of lush volcanoes. Dotted along the highland jungle are rural villages, many speaking their own Mayan languages. Homestays are the best way to get to know the cultures that make Lake Atitlán a one-of-a-kind place.
4. Belize
Hot, fun, easygoing. That’s Belize in three words! It’s the champion of island paradise vibes, especially on the coral-reefed shores of Caye Caulker. For the record, its literal motto is “Go Slow.”
Looking past the lazy beach days or swaying to Reggae at live music bars, Belize has got its surprises. Like its incredible food, influenced by Caribbean flavours. Or its insane marine biodiversity. Orrr, that it has a natural wonder so big, it can be seen from space!
Did you know that... Belize is the only country in Central America where English is the official language, not Spanish?
Where to Go in Belize?
Caye Caulker
You don’t come to Caye Caulker thinking it’ll be the bucket list moment. But it ends up being a favourite. Because when you’re not conquering volcanoes or ziplining through jungles, sometimes the best plan is no plan. Think smoothie bowls, salty air, barbecue grills, and bike rides from one tiny island corner to the next.
Hol Chan Marine Reserve
Ocean lovers, this is your dream destination. Go snorkelling in crystal-clear waters, teeming with marine life. Sea turtles, rays and nurse sharks are the most popular wildlife to see when you’re swimming around. If you get lucky, you might just meet a manatee: also known as a sea cow!
The Great Blue Hole
Technically visible from space, but we don’t do rocketship tours (yet). Until then, a scenic helicopter flight is the next best thing. And in case the name gave it away, it really is a dark, mysterious blue hole located in the middle of the ocean. Perfectly circular and over 100 metres deep… So, who’s volunteering first for the scuba dive?
5. Nicaragua
If you know, you know. Nicaragua may not draw the same crowd, but trust that the scenery inside this country is jaw-dropping. From emerald highlands to historic cities and black sand beaches, you’ll be surprised by how diverse it is.
Oh, and we almost forgot. You can go volcano boarding! 🌋
Here’s what Casey at Adventure360 said about her time backpacking around Central America:
Nicaragua is one of my favourites by far! I love how diverse it is. It’s still quite under the radar, so I feel really lucky to have gone.
Where to Go in Nicaragua?
Volcano Boarding
Only in Nicaragua. Grab a board and glide down the slope of a literal volcano, if you dare. First you hike to the top, which takes around an hour. Then comes the fun part! You’ll be back at the bottom before you know it. Just don’t go too crazy with the speed.
Totally optional, but if you’ve been needing a good travel story, well, it doesn’t get weirder than this.
Ometepe Island
Twin volcanoes frame this huge island, in the heart of Lake Nicaragua. It’s the ultimate escape into nature, from turquoise springs to jungle trails. Because it’s so remote, spending time with locals at a homestay is by far the best way to experience traditional island life. Your reset starts now.
6. El Salvador
Now we’re going fully off the beaten path. Welcome to Central America’s smallest country, where jungle waterfalls meet world-class surf breaks. Rugged and remote, El Salvador’s adventurous energy is unmatched.
Come for the stunning views, stay for the people. El Salvador has gone on quite the journey over the decades. Hearing the locals’ stories and experiencing that warm hospitality for yourself is something special.
Where to Go in El Salvador?
La Libertad
Insane sunsets? Tick. Rustic beachfront resorts? Tick. Breakfast burritos and the best coffee of your life? Okay, basically just describing paradise at this point. La Libertad is the surfer town you wish you could spend the rest of your life in. Take it at your own pace, with day trips to secret waterfalls if you fancy a hike and swim.
7. Honduras
Want in on a secret? Because Honduras is Central America’s best-kept one. Exploring those low-land jungles, immersed entirely in nature, is a feeling you just can’t replicate anywhere else.
Speaking of enjoying things almost all to yourself, visiting the ruins of Copán can only be described as time travel. Likened to Athens for its cultural weight, it’s a rare glimpse into the ancient Maya world and puts any textbook to shame.
Heads Up... You may need a visa for Honduras. To find the latest official travel guidance for UK citizens, please refer to our Visa Advice page.
Where to Go in Honduras?
Copán
(*Documentary voice*) Hidden in the mountains, lies Honduras’ most famous heritage site. The ancient ruins of Copán were only excavated just a few centuries ago, giving it a haunted effect. Your local guide will reveal the epic story of its rise and fall, but for now, we’ll leave you with this. Keep your eyes peeled as you wander past the stones, carved into mosaic patterns.
Travel Tips for Central America
Stick to the Trails
Beaches, volcanoes, jungle, stunning cities and more… Central America has a lot going for it! For your safety and enjoyment, we recommend sticking to backpacker-approved destinations and trusted routes, put together by experts like us. Preferably on one of our Central America tours. 😉
Lingo Goes a Long Way
You don’t have to be fluent, but a few Duolingo lessons will go a long way! Being able to say please (por favor) and thank you (gracias) is still appreciated, although we reckon you’ll pick up more Spanish the longer you travel.
Cash is King
Although cards are becoming a more popular payment option, cash is still number one in Central America. This is great to have on hand, especially when visiting local markets or more rural destinations.
Alongside the local currency, the US dollar is also widely accepted throughout Central America. This is especially true for El Salvador and Panama, where it’s an official currency.
Choose Activities Wisely
Adrenaline or outdoorsy experiences are a huge highlight for most travellers coming to Central America. Just make sure you do your research and follow the advice of your group leader for the best possible experience.
Check out our guide on What Are Optional Activities for full safety advice and how you can make the most of optional free time.
